1. cannot/can never/can hardly + enough/too/over-结构的用法

虽然带有否定词,但却表达的是强烈的肯定语气

例如:

We cannot be thankful enough to you for your timely and selfless help.

【译文】我们对你们及时而无私的援助真是感激不尽。

The importance of learning grammar cannot be overemphasized .

【译文】学习语法的重要性怎样强调都不为过。

Newton‘s contribution to modern science can scarcely be overrated .

【译文】牛顿对现代科学的贡献几乎怎样评价都不为过。

It cannot be too careful to go to a new neighborhood.

【译文】到一个陌生的社区怎样小心都不为过。

We can hardly praise his achievement too much.

【译文】我们儿乎怎样赞美他的成就都不为过。

A woman cannot have too many shoes.

【译文】一个女人有多少双鞋子都不算多。


2.It is a +形容词+名词+ that”结构的谚语,否定表示肯定或者肯定表示否定

例如:

It is a wise man that never makes mistakes.

(= The wisest man can sometimes make mistakes.)

【译文】智者千虑,必有一失。

It is a good horse that never stumbles.

(=The best horse can sometimes stumble.)

【译文】好马也有失蹄时。

It is a foolish bird that soils its own nest.

(=The most foolish bird will not soil its own nest.)

【译文】家丑不可外扬。

It is a poor man that never rejoices.

(=The poorest man can sometimes rejoice.)

【译文】人人皆有走运时。


3.否定词与形容词或副词的比较级连用,常表示最高级的含义

例如:

I couldn't agree with you more .

【译文】我完全同意你的观点。

She couldn’t feel better this morning.

【译文】今天早晨她感觉好极了。

Nothing is more impressive than the peace in the small town.

【译文】没有什么会比小镇的恬静更令人难忘的了。

There is nothing more natural than a child’s belief in his parents.

【译文】孩子对父母的信赖是最自然不过的事情了。

Nothing is more dangerous than a friend without discretion(谨慎)

【译文】世上最危险之事莫过于拥有一个莽撞的朋友。


4. but的否定含义

(1)如果but用在否定句中,并置于名词之后,常可将之理解为一个具否定意义的关系代词,意思相当于who/ which/that not(即相当于一个否定的定语从句)。

例如:

There never is a tax law presented but someone will oppose.

【译文】现行的税法没有一条是没人反对的。

There is no rule but has exceptions.

【译文】没有例外的规则是不存在的。(或译为:任何规则皆有例外。)


(2)在句子中,如果but不表示转折的逻辑,则通常可理解为一个具有否定之意的词,用于否定句时应联想到双重否定结构。

例如:

It never rains but pours.

【译文】祸不单行。(或译为:屋漏偏逢连阴雨。)

The children never played but a quarrel followed.

【译文】小孩们(不玩则已)每玩必争吵。


(3)but for + n要不是but that +从句如果不是。

例如:

But for my brother’s help,I would not have finished.

【译文】要不是我兄弟的帮助,我是无法完成的。

They would have resisted but that they lacked courage.

【译文】如果不是缺乏勇气他们会抵抗的。


(4) cannot but do = must do/have to do

例如:

He cannot but move to another street’because his building has to be pulled down soon.

【译文】由于他住的大楼很快就要被推倒,他不得不搬迁到另一条街上去。

One cannot but be struck by the enthusiasm of the representatives present

【译文】人们不由得被到场的代表们的热情所感动。


(5)nothing but,none but,no one but,nowhere but,nobody but = only

例如:

All day he did nothing but contemplated.

【译文】他整天什么也没干,一个劲儿地冥思苦想。

None but the brave deserve the fair.

【译文】(碜)英雄才能配美人。


5.其它一些特殊的表示否定的结构形式

(1)the last 和 the least 的用法。

例如:

He would be the last man to do such foolish things.

【译文】他绝不会干这种蠢事。

The dinner menu is the least of my worries tonight.

【译文】我一点儿都不担心今晚的菜单。

(2)比较级+than + to do表示对不定式内容的否定。

例如:

I am wiser than to believe what he said.

【译文】我还不至于(傻得)相信他的花言巧语。

You ought to know better than to rescue your enemy at the risk of your own life.

【译文】你不至于冒着生命危险去救你的敌人吧。

(3)morethan. . . can...表示“超出......的能力范围”之意。

例如:

The hardship of the work was more than an ordinary man can bear.

【译文】这份工作的艰苦不是一般人能承受的。

This is more than I can tell.

【译文】这件事我不能讲。

When my old friend Brian urged me to accept a cigarette,it was more than I could bear.

【译文】当我的老朋友布赖恩怂恿我接受一支香烟时,我实在熬不住了。

Such a notorious person has got to the top of the company. That’s more than I could bargain for.

【译文】这样一个臭名昭著的家伙竟然登上了公司最高层,这个我可没料到。
