We live and depend /dɪˈpɛnd/ on our planet, Earth. Often, we don’t treat Earth with the respect /rɪˈspɛkt/ that we should. Earth Day is a special day set aside to remind us of how important our planet is. Earth Day is celebrated /ˈsɛlɪbreɪtɪdˈ/ around the world on April 22. On Earth Day, people are reminded to enjoy Earth’s beauty and to preserve /prɪˈzɜrv/ it for future /ˈfyu tʃər/ generations /ˌdʒɛn əˈreɪ ʃənz/. The first Earth Day took place in the United States in 1970, and it became an international /ˌɪn tərˈnæʃ ə nl/ event in 1990.

On Earth Day, people celebrate Earth by going outside to enjoy nature. Some people volunteer to do a neighborhood clean-up /ˈklinˌʌp/. Neighborhood clean-ups are when groups of people get together with rubbish bags and pick up all the litter /ˈlɪt ər/ on the ground. Other people celebrate Earth Day by doing something nice for nature, such as building a bird house, or teaching children about conservation /ˌkɒn sərˈveɪ ʃən/ and recycling /riˈsaɪ kəlɪŋ/.

How to Celebrate:
Treat every day like it’s Earth Day! If everyone respected nature and worked to keep the Eearth clean and healthy, the planet could begin to heal /hil/. Here are some environmentally friendly tips:
• Recycle /riˈsaɪ kəl/ paper, plastic and aluminum.
• Reuse /ˌriːˈjuː.z/ bags when you go shopping.
• Save items that you can use again, such as boxes, containers, and water bottles.
• Donate /ˈdoʊ neɪt/ old toys and clothes.
• Reduce /rɪˈdyus/ waste – buy only what you need, and order less food at restaurants.
• Turn off lights when you leave a room.
• Unplug /ʌnˈplʌg/ appliances /əˈplaɪ ənsiːs/ when you aren’t using them.
• Wear extra clothes instead of turning on the heat.
• Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
• Plant a tree.
• Plant a garden and grow your own vegetables.
• Reduce waste by ordering less food at restaurants
• When you’re writing or drawing, use both sides of the paper.
• Put your rubbish in the bin.
• Teach your family and friends how to protect the environment.
